Why the prep is the price
A ceramic coating is a clear, hard layer that bonds to your paint. It is transparent, which means it is faithful: every swirl mark, every water spot and every bit of etching under it is still there, now sealed under something designed to last years.
That is why a shop that quotes low without seeing the car is quoting for a coating and not for the job. The cheap version is a wash, a wipe-down and a coat. The expensive version is a decontamination wash, a clay bar, one or more machine polishing stages to remove defects, a panel wipe and then the coating, and the polishing is where the hours go.
One published breakdown puts labour at 60 to 70 percent of the total, and that matches what the tiers above look like: the jump from entry-level to mid-range is not a better bottle, it is a correction stage.

What a five year coating warranty is
Coating warranties are not like film warranties. A paint protection film warranty is issued by a manufacturer against defects in a physical product you can point at. A coating warranty is usually issued by the installer or the coating brand against loss of performance, and it almost always carries conditions: an annual inspection, a maintenance wash schedule, sometimes a requirement to use the brand's own products.
Read the conditions before the number of years persuades you. A seven year warranty that lapses if you miss one annual inspection is a shorter promise than it looks, and the shops that are straightest about this are usually the ones worth booking.

Getting a quote you can compare
Ask for four things in writing: the coating product and how many layers, how many stages of correction are included, the warranty term and its conditions, and what happens if the paint turns out to be worse than it looked in the car park.
That last one matters more than people expect. A shop that has a stated process for finding heavy defects mid-job, and calls you rather than coating over them, is a shop that has thought about it. One that has no answer will coat over it.
