What each one actually is
Wax is traditionally carnauba, a natural wax, usually blended with oils and solvents. It sits ON the paint as a soft sacrificial film. It is warm-looking on dark colours, it is very forgiving to apply, and it comes off with detergent, heat and time.
A paint sealant is synthetic, typically a polymer that cross-links as it cures and grips the paint rather than resting on it. It is more chemically resistant than wax, less warm-looking to purists, and it lasts several times longer.
A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a hard, glass-like layer bonded to the clear coat. It is the only one of the three that behaves like a permanent addition to the car rather than a dressing, and it is also the only one that needs the paint underneath to be right first, because you are sealing that paint in.

What each is actually good at
This is where the comparison stops being a ranking.
- Wax is good at looking wonderful on a car you enjoy working on. Applying it is pleasant, it is cheap, it flatters dark paint, and topping it up every couple of months is the point rather than a chore.
- Sealant is good at being the sensible default. It lasts a season, it survives detergent better than wax, and it takes the same twenty minutes to apply. For most daily drivers it is the best value on this page.
- A coating is good at making washing faster and safer for years, which matters most if you wash the car yourself and want fewer swirls. It is a labour purchase, not a bottle purchase.
- None of them stops a stone chip, resists a brush tunnel, or removes a scratch. Those are film, avoidance and correction respectively.
Choosing between them
Ask what is annoying you. If the car looks dull, none of these is the answer: that is paint correction, priced at paint correction cost. If washing is a chore and you want that to change for years, that is a coating, and the honest version of the case is is ceramic coating worth it.

Can you use more than one?
Sealant over wax is pointless: the sealant needs to reach the paint to bond, and wax is in the way.
Wax over a coating is worse than pointless. Coating manufacturers say plainly that wax will not bond to the coating and is unnecessary, and one publishes that only its own maintenance products are recommended over it.
The one stack that makes sense is a ceramic spray topper over a cured ceramic coating, which restores beading between maintenance washes. Everything else is one product too many.
