How does self-healing film work?
Self-healing film is paint protection film with an elastomeric topcoat that flows back to smooth when it is warmed, so light swirl marks and fine scratches in that topcoat disappear. The healing happens in the topcoat only. A cut that goes through the film does not heal, and the paint beneath it never does.

How does self-healing film work?
An elastomeric topcoat with a memory, and heat is what reminds it.
Underneath, the film is tpu film — the thermoplastic urethane that gives paint protection film its stretch and its clarity. On top of that sits a thin elastomeric topcoat, and that layer is where the healing happens. It is formulated to deform rather than to fracture, so a light scuff displaces it instead of removing it.
Deformed material wants to return to the shape it was cured in. At room temperature it does so slowly or not at all; add heat and the polymer chains become mobile enough to flow, and the displaced material relaxes back into the scratch. From the outside it looks like the mark vanishes.
That is the whole mechanism, and its limits fall straight out of it. Nothing has been added and nothing has been repaired: material that is still present has moved back. Material that was removed, or that was never topcoat in the first place, has nothing to flow back.

The fingernail test is the honest shortcut, and it is the one to teach a customer: if you can feel the edge of the scratch with a fingernail, it is through the topcoat and it is not coming back. If you cannot, warmth will probably deal with it.
What actually triggers the healing
Sun, warm water, or a heat gun in hands that know what they are doing.
Sunlight is the everyday one. A dark car parked out on a warm day gets there on its own, which is why owners often notice marks disappearing without doing anything about them. Warm water poured over the panel is the deliberate version, and it is the one to recommend to a customer because it is almost impossible to get wrong.
A heat gun is the fast version and belongs in the bay rather than the driveway. Too much heat, held too close, distorts film rather than relaxing it, and an owner chasing a scratch with a paint stripper on a cold morning is a warranty call in the making.
How warm, and for how long, is a property of the specific film and is published in its own documentation. This page deliberately does not print a temperature: a number invented for a general case would be read as a specification for every case.
Does self-healing film really work?
Yes, for what it claims. The disappointment is always about what it was sold as.
Every unhappy self-healing conversation this trade has starts the same way: somebody was told the film heals scratches, and then a scratch did not heal. The film performed exactly as designed. The sentence was wrong.
"It heals light marks in the topcoat when it is warm" is a claim that survives contact with a customer's fingernail. "It heals scratches" does not, and the cost of the shorter sentence is a callback, a difficult inspection and sometimes a redo of a panel that was never faulty. The precise version is also more impressive, because it is checkable.

Does self-healing film wear out?
It is a consumable layer that has been doing physical work. Of course it does.
Every recovery is the topcoat deforming and relaxing, and materials that do that have a fatigue life. Films are sold with a stated service life and warranted against defects for a stated term precisely because both parties know the layer is being spent — which is the entire product idea, not a flaw in it.
What shortens it is predictable: aggressive chemicals, abrasive washing, pressure washers held close to an edge, and edges left lifted so dirt and water get underneath. Ordinary two-bucket washing and an eye on the edges is most of the maintenance there is.
At the end of it the film is removed and, if the customer wants, replaced — and the paint under it comes out looking like the day it was covered. The precise claim closes better than the loose one
Self-healing is the most over-promised property in this trade and one of the easiest to describe correctly. A shop that explains the topcoat in two sentences sounds like it knows what it sells; a shop that says "it heals scratches" sounds like everybody else and is storing up a callback.

No, and the two get merged at the counter constantly. Self-healing is about scratches in the topcoat recovering with heat. Water beading and easier cleaning are hydrophobic properties, which come from a coating or from a film's hydrophobic topcoat. A film can do both, one, or neither, and they should be sold as separate claims.
Do ceramic coatings self-heal?
A cured ceramic coating is a hard, thin layer, and hardness is the opposite of the elasticity healing needs, so as a rule it does not recover the way a film topcoat does. Some products market a self-healing claim; read what they say it heals, and treat the ceramic coating and the film as answering different problems.
