Two published price lists, side by side
These two sources disagree, and the disagreement is the useful part: one is a single shop's flat rate card and the other is a market survey. Shown together, they tell you what a simple job and a difficult one each look like.

The flat rate card publishes one to three hours for a full vehicle, and up to four where the film is very old, has defroster lines under it, or has had a DIY attempt on it already.
Why the rear window is its own price
Almost every rear windshield has defroster elements printed onto the inside of the glass, in the same place the tint adhesive is. They are thin conductive lines, they are on the surface rather than inside it, and a scraper takes them off as easily as it takes off film.
A shop removes rear film with steam or a heat source and patience, lifting it as one piece and dissolving the adhesive rather than scraping it. That is the hour or more that the price reflects, and it is the specific reason DIY on a rear window is a poor trade: a dead defroster line is not repairable in any way most owners would accept.
Owners who have tried it are easy to find on car forums, and the pattern is consistent: the film comes off in small flecks after years in the sun, the job takes most of a day, and the defroster sometimes does not survive.
When removal is free
Many shops discount or include removal when you are buying new film from them the same day, because the panel has to be clean for the new film anyway and the labour overlaps.
It is worth asking explicitly, and worth asking in the right order: get the new tint quote first, then ask what removal adds. A shop that quotes 400 dollars for tint and then 150 for removal is telling you something different from one that quotes 500 all in.

When film is telling you to remove it
Three signs, and they are all adhesive rather than film.
- Purple. Dyed films lose their colour stability first, and the purple stage means the dye has broken down. It does not come back.
- Bubbles that are not new. Small bubbles in the first week are usually the cure and go away on their own; the timetable is how long does tint take to cure. Bubbles after months are adhesive failure.
- Hazing you cannot clean off. If the inside of the glass will not come clear with a proper glass cleaner and a microfibre towel, the film is going, not the window.

Why does the rear window cost more to strip?
