The two documents
The manufacturer's warranty is issued by the company that made the film. It is about the material: did this film do what the maker said it would for as long as they said. Published terms consistently name four defects, and the remedy is normally removal and replacement of the film at the manufacturer's option, with labour coverage varying by product.
The shop's warranty is about the fitting: whether the film was cleaned, cut, laid and tucked correctly. Lifted edges in the first months are almost always an installation question, and the manufacturer has nothing to say about them.
This is why the question "what is the warranty?" has no useful single answer, and why how to choose a PPF installer asks for both terms in writing. The trade word for the second one is workmanship warranty.
One manufacturer's published terms, by film line
These are quoted from a single manufacturer's public warranty page, read on 22 September 2026, because a table blended across brands would be a document nobody actually issued. Other manufacturers publish their own terms and they differ; ask for yours by name.
| Film line | Years | Defects named | Transferable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultimate Plus and Stealth | 10 | Yellowing, cracking, blistering, delaminating | Yes, with proof of original installation date |
| Ultimate Fusion | 10, plus 4 on gloss and UV | The same four, plus oxidation, loss of gloss, UV damage and fading for four years | Yes, and an annual inspection is required |
| Colour PPF | 10 | Yellowing, cracking, blistering, delaminating | No |
| Exo Armor | 7 | Yellowing, cracking, blistering, delaminating | No |
| Protex Lite | 5 | Yellowing, cracking, blistering, delaminating | No |
A second major manufacturer publishes ten years against defects including yellowing, bubbling and cracking on its professional film line. The pattern across the market is that premium lines carry ten years and entry lines carry five.
The exclusions, in the manufacturer's own words
The exclusions are where most disappointment lives, and they are not hidden. The published terms consulted exclude, explicitly:
- Damage from outside forces, including the physical impact of rocks or road debris. The film absorbing a stone chip is the film working, not failing.
- Scratches, water spots and staining.
- Collision damage, vandalism and intentional damage.
- Damage from improper wash techniques, automatic car washes or incorrect wash tools. This one is worth reading twice; see can a PPF car go through a car wash.
- Non-compliance with the published care instructions, which are themselves a document you can read before you buy.
How a claim actually goes
The published process is: proof that the film was professionally installed, then pre-approval from the manufacturer before any repair work starts. One manufacturer publishes a two to three business day processing time and states that labour coverage varies by product and that all repairs require formal approval.
Practically, that means three things. Keep the invoice, because it is the proof of installation date. Go back to the installing shop first, because the claim usually runs through them. And do not have the film removed or replaced before approval, because unapproved work is the common way a valid claim becomes an invalid one.
If the problem is yellowing, why PPF yellows covers what causes it and which lines name it. If it is an edge, PPF edges lifting covers which of the two warranties is likely to apply.

Questions people ask
Does a PPF warranty cover yellowing?
The manufacturer terms consulted name yellowing explicitly among the covered defects, alongside cracking, blistering and delaminating, for the published term of that film line. Read your own film's document, because lines differ.
Does a PPF warranty cover rock chips?
No. Published terms exclude damage from outside forces including the physical impact of rocks and road debris. Stopping those chips is the film's job; the warranty is about defects in the film itself.
Who fixes a lifted edge, the manufacturer or the shop?
Usually the shop. Lifted edges in the early life of a job point at installation rather than at the material, which is why the installer's own warranty term is the one to ask about before you book.
Is a PPF warranty transferable if I sell the car?
It depends on the line. In the terms consulted, the premium lines are transferable with proof of the original installation date and several other lines are explicitly not. Ask for the specific document before you buy.
