How does VIN capture work in Service VIN?

  • VIN (vehicle identification number) is the unique 17-character code that identifies a vehicle.
  • VIN capture is the step that turns it into a record: Service VIN reads it from a photo of the door jamb, from a typed entry, or from the job's intake card, decodes the year, make and model, and files it against the customer so the next quote, warranty claim or top-up starts from the right car.

How does Service VIN capture a VIN?

Three ways, and all three land on the same vehicle record. The mobile app reads it from a photo of the door jamb or windshield plate. It can be typed on the job's intake card. And the office record takes it directly on the vehicle. Whichever door it comes through, the year, make and model are decoded from it and filed against the customer.

Why record a VIN instead of a licence plate?

Because the plate changes and the VIN does not. It survives a sale, a move to another province or state, and a customer who cannot remember what was done three years ago. A warranty claim, a top-up quote or a maintenance reminder answered from the VIN is answered against the right car, which is the whole point of keeping the record.

What does a shop do with a decoded VIN?

It becomes the vehicle in the customer's garage: year, make and model on the quote, the job, the warranty certificate and the invoice, with the film and coverage that was installed attached to it. The next time that car is in, the paperwork starts filled in rather than blank, which is worth more three years later than it is on the day.
